Music Merit Scholarships: Perpetuating a Legacy of Artistry and Service

In order to perpetuate the Gustafsons' legacy of artistry in the service of God's glory, the Dwight and Gwen Gustafson Music Scholarship Endowment was established to provide scholarships to students enrolled in the BJU Division of Music academic programs and/or ensembles who demonstrate both a strong musical potential and a commitment to glorifying the Lord and serving others through music. Scholarship funds provide recipients the opportunity to study with BJU's highly qualified Christian faculty as they develop their vision for pursuing and sharing the beauty of God through musical excellence and redemptive artistry in church ministries, schools, and other vocational careers and communities around the world.

Who are Dwight and Gwen Gustafson?

Dr. Dwight Leonard Gustafson served as Dean of the Bob Jones University School of Fine Arts for 43 years. His impact as a composer, conductor, educator, and administrator will forever remain unparalleled in the history of the school. Mrs. Gwendolyn (Gwen) Adams Gustafson was renowned for her beautiful voice and gracious spirit. She taught in the Division of Music for over 35 years, sang in countless University productions, and faithfully supported her husband until his death in 2014. Together they touched thousands of lives through their humble service and commitment to artistic excellence for the glory of the Lord.

Hastie__Sandy_and_Donna_6604_RT_HS__3_.jpgSandy and Donna Hastie established the Dwight and Gwen Gustafson Music Scholarship Endowment in June of 2019 to support BJU by providing music merit scholarship awards for deserving student musicians who demonstrate a strong potential in music and a commitment to cultivating, refining, and applying their musical gifts for the glory of God and the good of others.

A close friend introduced us to BJU. Through several visits, we became familiar with the University’s mission and saw firsthand the caliber of musical excellence and the quality and maturity of the students that BJU produces.

Not only does BJU grow the musical skills of their students, but they improve their life skills—specifically preparing the next generation of leaders to impact lives by sharing the love of God in a lost and broken world that needs a Savior. BJU is successfully integrating artistry and faith in such a manner as to develop leaders of tomorrow who will make a difference in this world!

We felt the need to help BJU attain its goals for its students and therefore started this endowment. In such a way, we can be a part of producing musician leaders that will go on to positively impact countless others in schools, churches, and arts organizations. Please join us in supporting this endowment and contribute to the development of future leaders!

Your Impact

This year the Division of Music awarded 15 music scholarships to new incoming students. These hard-working students are at BJU in part thanks to the generosity of donors like you. Our goal for the Gustafson Endowment is to sustain music scholarship awards for at least 25 new students each year throughout their four-year college experience. Together, that's 100 students impacted each year--who will go on to impact their own students, churches, and communities!

GusFamily.png“We are very grateful to BJU and to the donors for establishing this endowment in honor of our parents, Dwight and Gwen Gustafson. They would have resisted the honor to themselves, but they would have been proud to have their names associated with an attempt to promote the mission of BJU's music program and to assist promising young musicians. They devoted their careers to the training of Christian musicians and to the training of their teachers; and they would have warmly welcomed, as partners in that work, all those who want to contribute to music scholarships at BJU.” - The Gustafson children
