John Frank Mitchell, 88, passed into the presence of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on July 21, 2017 at the University of Colorado Hospital in Aurora, CO.

He was born in Dallas, TX and was a graduate of the University of Texas.  He served in the United States Marine Corps as a fighter pilot and was honorably discharged at the rank of Captain.  Flying was a lifelong passion. Mr. Mitchell committed his life to serving the Lord. After leaving the Marine Corps, he became a Christian business man and spent his career in the petroleum industry eventually starting his own energy exploration company. He was universally admired. He was known as a man of his word and as a man of great character. His actions gave testimony to his faith.

Mr. Mitchell faithfully served His Lord as a Sunday school teacher and deacon in his church.  He faithfully served on the Bob Jones University board from 1976 until he retired in 2007 due to health issues.  He was a member of the Executive Committee for 26 of those years.  He truly loved the Lord and faithfully served the University by serving as a role model for other board members, advising the Administration, supporting capital campaigns, and encouraging students to come to the University, including all of his children.

In addition, he served as a board member for several faith-based organizations.  He was a generous man and gave readily of his time and resources. He showed genuine interest in everyone he met.

“I appreciated the wisdom that John brought to the University in his role on the board,” said Dr. Roy Barton, who served as CFO during much of Mitchell’s tenure on the University board. “For instance, some of the insight he brought due to his background in oil and gas exploration saved the University thousands of dollars as we assessed gifted properties.” Barton remembers John Mitchell as a man who loved this school and was dedicated to its success.

Mr. Mitchell was a devoted husband and father. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Evelyn Barker Mitchell; five children, Linda Jaeggli of Greenville, SC, Anna Musgrave of Parker, CO, Thomas Mitchell of Spring TX, Max Mitchell of Castle Pines, CO, Samuel Mitchell of Lorton, VA; one sister, Marlene Bolton of Tulsa, OK; seventeen grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren. At the time of his death he anticipated the births of 5 more great grandchildren.

Mr. Mitchell’s life verse was I Corinthians 4:2 "Moreover it is required in stewards that a man be found faithful." He exemplified faithfulness.

The Bob Jones University Alumni Association expresses our appreciation for the service of Mr. Mitchell and was happy to have him as an Honorary Member for thirty-nine years.
