Beneth Jones: A Willing Instrument for God’s Provision

The tears of desperation welled up in Kim’s eyes as she closed the door to her PO box, the small, black letters reading “balance due” staring up at her starkly from the page. Through the tears she clung to one last hope: Maybe the Lord will provide.

Kim reached for the next envelope in the stack of mail. Unnoticed before, it was white, unmarked, and had Kim's name written in perfectly-scripted handwriting. She opened the second envelope, almost dropping the coins that fell into her hand along with a stack of cash. She searched for any clue about the identity of the giver, but there was none. Joy replaced fear; ultimately, the Lord alone had provided. Little did she know that it was actually Beneth Jones whom God had prompted to help.

Kim’s story is not unique. Beneth Jones invested in many students throughout her life by giving timely, anonymous gifts to meet pressing needs. The Beneth Peters Jones Memorial Scholarship seeks to continue her legacy of being a willing instrument for financial provision in the lives of women students.

The Makings of a BJU Scholarship for Women

After Beneth’s funeral, we received multiple requests from women who have been touched by Beneth’s life of ministry asking if they could contribute in a way that would honor and continue her legacy of sacrificial service. The board established a student scholarship to continue her vision.

Beneth had a longstanding pattern of contributing to the needs of students, many of whom never knew the gift came from her. When she heard about a student’s need, she took proceeds from the sale of her books and gave to cover the school bill shortfall. To Beneth, it was personal—during her studies at BJU she had to sit out for a time. Because she insisted on giving mostly anonymously, many recipients never knew who the gift came from. The students saw it as an answer from the Lord, which is just the way Beneth wanted it. She wanted Him to receive all the credit. She considered this behind-the-scenes work to be the most fulfilling part of her earthly ministry.

Helping Women from Ministry Families

As was Beneth’s practice, the Beneth Peters Jones Memorial Scholarship provides emergency or “rescue” funds for a student’s school bill. It is an endowed scholarship fund for women, with a preference for alumni families in full-time Christian service. Today, we desire to honor Beneth by continuing her pattern of giving as a means of bringing credit to her Lord.

Who is Beneth Peters Jones?

Beneth Peters Jones is the late wife of Dr. Bob Jones III, who served as the University’s president from 1971-2005. She came as a student in 1955 and never left! As BJU’s “first lady,” Beneth enjoyed an active role in the school’s ministry that included teaching classes for women in Christian service, performing in University productions (on film and live), authoring thirteen books, speaking to ladies at camps and conferences, and traveling alongside her husband. In addition to her public ministry, she was also a faithful mother to three children and grandmother to six grandchildren.
